Safety Director 101

"How to Develop & Maintain An Effective Safety Program"

Nevada Contractors Insurance offered a seminar for safety directors in March. The class was designed to increase safety awareness and practices by helping safety people put together programs that work.

Who is the safety director? Often, the question comes up, and it’s not easy to answer. Sometimes the job comes as an addition to other duties, or is assigned to a person who may or may not know much about safety to begin with.

The unlucky safety designee may not have much support from management, have no budget to work with and get limited time in the field. Yet when an accident occurs or the company is hit with an OSHA citation, it is the safety director who catches the blame.

The first step in setting up a program is to define who is going to run it and set out the parameters of the job. Ideally, a safety person should:

–Evaluate company hazards;

–Develop a written safety program;

–Establish new hire and ongoing safety training programs and procedures;

–Be responsible for safety enforcement;

–Save the company money by cutting down on accidents and OSHA fines.

The course goals were to help safety people understand OSHA requirements, know what they did and did not need to teach new employees, how to get support from upper management, and how to conduct effective safety inspections.
