Mold "Survivors" Form Group

"We’re going to hear our speakers first, then answer questions," said Lisa Sherman. "Those of you with short-term memory loss, please write your questions down."

Some 200 people crowded into a meeting room at the West Sahara Library to hear Sherman and several others talk on a subject getting more attention and becoming more emotional every day. Most of them had one thing in common, according to the organizers.

They had survived an encounter with toxic mold.

Mold Survivors of America, Inc. is a new organization geared to spreading the word about mold. The group held it’s inaugural meeting on May 4, and announced plans to expand membership and activities.

Lisa Sherman is president of the corporation, and said the mission of the organization is, "To promote better understanding of the many problems associated with exposure to mold, fungus and toxigens in both the workplace and home environment."

Treasurer Laine Swainston wasted no time outlining, "Who has a mold problem."

Developers, building owners, contractors, tenants and building occupants were on his list. All of these either create or suffer from mold and its’ effects.

Mold victims, according to the group’s web site, must deal with financial consequences, mental anguish, insurance companies, consultants, doctors, and attorneys. The organization hopes to serve as a support group for individuals suffering from exposure, and provide education and information to those with questions about mold.

Swainston said that mold is an, "Emotional, gut level issue. Not just for people who are exposed, but also for the people who are responsible for the exposure."

Dr. Linda Stetzenbach was the first guest speaker, followed by John Terranova, a mold remediator. Stetzenbach gave a talk on "Mold 101," an abbreviated version of a talk she gave at the Southern Nevada Home Builder’s Association H.O.M.E.S. seminar earlier this year.

Terranova spoke of the kind of effort needed to remediate mold from a building. He is serving as executive director of the corporation. The organization’s inaugural event was sponsored by the law firm of Burris and Thomas. Their web site is www.moldsurvivorsofamerica.org
