Tower Of Scaffold
Airport Expansion Creates High Rise Challenge
by Joe Wheeler

The $60 million dollar "D" gates at McCarran International Airport made some heads hurt long before the project even started. Scaffold erectors spent months designing a secure and stable work platform that would conform to the shape of the new air traffic control tower.

"We had to cantilever the scaffold nine feet at the top to fit the design of the building," said Darren Burkett. Burkett is project manager and estimator with Nevada Scaffold & Equipment, the local supplier of the scaffolding.

"This has taken the better part of a year from start to finish, just from design and bid to actual product," Burkett said. "It’s been a long process, and this is the end result."

Consulting with the manufacturer, Waco Scaffolding & Equipment, Burkett worked with the project’s engineers to configure a scaffold that would meet the demands of height, weight, and stability. Burkett spent several months designing and redesigning the structure, and faced a particular challenge accommodating an artistic angle in the building next to the under-construction control tower. In the end, the solution was to cantilevered the scaffold at its topmost point.

Installing cantilevered scaffold at a height of more than 100 feet is no job for amateurs. Leonardo Campo, installer for Waco Scaffolding & Equipment, brought an experienced crew from Los Angeles to scale the heights.
"I’m still doing the very top, which is the most complex part because of the way it slopes at the top," Campo said. "It’s a challenge, but we make it happen."

The control tower is being constructed with metal stud and aluminum panels. Steel plating and oversized mud sills help stabilize the scaffold. Sletten Construction is the general contractor on the project.

Looming over the job site at a height of 137 feet, the scaffold is slated to top out at more than 170 feet, and remain in place for nearly a year until work is completed.
