WSRCA’s Annual Expo 2001 Draws 250 Exhibitors

By C. Frederick Charles

Starting on Tuesday, June 5, with a golf tournament and a Presidential Welcoming Reception, and concluding on Saturday, June 9, with a Rooftop Quality Assurance Course, the Western States Roofing Contractors Association’s

(WSRCA) 27th Annual Convention and Trade Show brought out 250 exhibitors representing firms from across the nation.

According to Lee Tolley, WSRCA president and Connie Douglas, the association’s convention chairperson, the 5-day event was a complete success.

"Those who manned exhibitor’s booths were highly pleased with the turnout and enthusiasm demonstrated by attendees. In fact, we plan to have our 2002 convention in Las Vegas once again."

Mark Paxson of Metric Roofing and president of the Roofing Contractors Association of Nevada, joined RCAN board members Curtis Cummings, Red Rock Roofing, and Rick Riegert, Davey Roofing, in congratulating WSRCA for putting on a terrific show. "Many of our contractor and supplier members were among those who participated in the event, either by attending the many seminars or as exhibitors. We’re already looking forward to next year’s convention."

Affiliate Executive/Affiliate President Breakfast Meet Discuss Issues

Executive directors representing western states roofing associations gathered on Wednesday, June 6, at the Rio hotel to discuss a number of issues including, "How to Improve Member Attendance at Meetings," "Group Insurance Programs," "Getting Members Involved," and other subjects of mutual interest.

Gene Meyer, president, Roofing Contractors Association of Washington, told attendees that OSHA is focusing its ergonomics push in his state. "We’ve been paying close attention to their activities. If OSHA is successful in getting its way in Washington, they’ll move on to other jurisdictions. There’s no question that if ergonomics regulations become a reality in the future, countless small firms, including roofing companies, will go out of business," he warned.

Dan Cohen, executive director, Arizona Roofing Contractors Association, noted that 128 members of his organization attended their last dinner meeting. "At present our roster tops 272 members. We’re also stressing safety issues because this facet of our industry involves extremely high costs."

Among those in attendance were: Tim Lyons, RCA of Hawaii; Bill Callahan, RCA of the Bay Area Counties; C. Frederick Charles, executive director, Roofing Contractors Association of Nevada; E. Lee Richmond, RCA of San Diego; Michael Promen, president, National Roofing Contractors Association; and Alison LaValley, NRCA associate director.
