Nevada Subcontractors Association Builds War Chest

The Nevada Subcontractors Association has been collecting money for their upcoming legislative effort to reform the way construction defect lawsuits are handled in Nevada.

Henry Sharp, a longtime member of the plumber’s association, was one of the founding members of the subcontractor group. Sharp was on hand when the Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors of Nevada presented a ceremonial giant check in the amount of $50,000 to the association.

"The plumbers are always the first ones to step up to the plate," Sharp said. "We saw construction defect lawsuits as a problem back in 1996, and started working on it then."

The NSA is part of the Coalition for Fairness in Construction, a newly formed organization comprised of the NSA, the Associated General Contractors (AGC), the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association (SNHBA), and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).

The Nevada Subcontractors Association was also pledged up to $100,000 from Nevada Contractors Insurance as they sought to reform Chapter 40, the part of the Nevada revised Statutes that deal with construction defects.

The Coalition’s goals are:

1) To define a construction defect;

2) To create an "Obligation to Repair" that will allow, and compel,
contractors to repair problems correctly and in a timely manner.

3) To require that settlements go towards actually repairing defects.
