NCI Safety Walk The Chinatown Mall on Spring Mountain Road is extremely popular, with busloads of tourists flooding the facility on a daily basis. Harsch Investment Properties owns the buildings located across Wynn Boulevard, and is wisely seeking to draw off some of Chinatown’s visitors by creating an Asian style design look. Oakview Construction is general contractor on the job, and allowed Nevada Contractors Insurance’s Safety Committee a chance to tour the intense renovation project. |

Patrick Gallagher, Chairman of Nevada Contractors Insurance, with Jack Rannazzizi, Safety Director for RBM Construction |
Vivian Stanford, assistant property manager for Harsch,
said the company is going into the second year of renovations, and that the
final look of the buildings has been well received. "We kind of created
it as we went. There are three building here, each 1200 feet long, with a
prospective 170 tenants."
Iron workers are doing most of the work. The frames and supports for the improvements are all made of iron, and the pieces are bolted into place before the Asian facade gets a decorative coat of paint. One ambitious part of the plan calls for the destruction of a chunk of building to make way for a drive-through area that will increase access to the area. "We’re taking out 150 feet of building to create a drive through with retail spaces on the back," Stanford said. "We’ll have another Oriental facade and this will be retail, too." |

The NCI Safety Committee noted the intense welding going
on as workers with fashioned the frames for the decorative pieces. Ron Landram,
vice-president of Risk Services-Nevada asked why the welders had fire
extinguishers at their sides.
"It’s there to put out a fire on their clothes," Landram said. "If their clothes catch fire, it’s to put themselves out." The committee got a look at the scaffolding provided by Nevada Scaffold & Equipment. One of the challenges on this particular job is providing safety for both workers above and customers on the ground. Completion date for this phase of construction is the end of December. |
