Land Two In Three New U.S. Construction Jobs in Nevada, Nationwide
Latinos
make up 13.6 percent of the U.S. employment population, but accounted for
36.7 percent of the 2006 U.S. employment growth, a study showed.
Most of the jobs Hispanic workers landed were in the construction
industry, the Pew Hispanic Center said. Another study, "Vital Beyond Belief: The Demographic and Economic Facts about Hispanic Immigrants in Nevada," issued by the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, found that Hispanic immigrant workers make up 47 percent of Nevada’s construction and mining workforce, and 22-percent of the entertainment and tourist service workforce. Hispanic employment increased by almost 1 million from 2005 to 2006, with foreign-born Latinos who arrived since 2000 responsible for about 24 percent of the total U.S. employment increase. In Nevada, the state's Hispanic legal and illegal immigrant population grew from 316,593 to 381,467 from 2000 to 2005, a 20.5 percent increase, while the Hispanic legal and illegal immigrant workforce increased 26.5 percent, from 152,632 to 193,021.
Illegal
immigrants accounted for about two-thirds of the increase in recently
arrived Hispanic workers, the Pew Center estimated.
The PLA did not differentiate between legal and illegal workers. According to the Center To Protect Workers’ Rights, Hispanics in Nevada’s construction industry make up 28 percent of the total workforce. That figure is slightly higher than the percentage of Hispanics represented in the total Nevada population. In Nevada, Hispanics account for 22 percent of the State’s population according to Census Bureau figures. Federal law requires Nevada to provide schooling to all children and emergency health care to illegal immigrants. As the southwest continues to see increased Hispanic immigration – both legal and illegal – both of those numbers for Nevada should continue to grow at a rapid pace. |
